A devastating cyclone'Thane'
Dear friends and well-wishers of 'Shanti',
Best wishes for a 'Happy New Year' 2012…let us pray and have faith in God and hope in humanity.
Here in Pondy and in south east India in general a devastating cyclone'Thane' caused heavy damages
in the early hours of Friday the 29th of December'11 uprooting 70% of the trees, several electric
posts apart from sweeping away most of the huts in Pondy. Standing crops were severely damaged.
The wind speed rose to 150 Kmph. accompanied by heavy rain. A disaster of this magnitude has not
taken place in Pondy in the last 45 years.
It was a difficult period for the next days without electricity,
water and basic supplies like milk, vegetables etc. To give an idea we are sending a few photographs.
a) Damages at home and the hand work unit in the shed on the terrace of our house.
The keith (coconut leaves) structure fully collapsed along with all the sun shades, breaking the sewing
machine and other materials for the hand-work unit.
b) Damages in 'Shanti' : All the three keith huts used as class rooms for the kindergarten and
'after school coaching' classes have to be re-constructed and broken furniture in them redone or
repaired. The shed for the cows and for keeping the tools have to be re-constructed. Many coconut trees
and other big trees in the compound of 'Shanti' have to be cut and removed at the soonest. Parts of the
compound wall of 'Shanti' are precariously poised and have to be repaired immediately.
c) Photos from the surrounding area: These are a few photos of the neighborhood from where most
of our children come. Arrangements have been made for the badly affected ones in 'Shanti' temporarily.
d) 'Shanti Land': The gate and a part of the boundary wall was knocked off with the huge
tree on the opposite side of the road falling over it along with the heavy electric post
Clearing of fallen trees and rebuilding of huts has started in 'Shanti' and will take some time
for the situation to regain normalcy. It is our request to all to share in this process of restoration.
Thanking you, On behalf of 'Shanti', Debi & Dani
